I have a 94 toyota paseo, and I had many problems with it overheating and smoking so I replaced the head gasket and had the head worked on. It was warped. My last post was about it smoking and I was told to let it run for about 5 or 10 mins to let the exhaust clean itself out, and while I was doin that, it was just idling (no smoking) and it was making an odd noise. It sounded like it was sucking in air...what could this be? Would this have an effect on why it would be smoking?
wecome back. a hissing noise could b a vacuum leak. yes, that could have something 2 do with smoking. is the check engine lite on? did u disconnect the bat. during the install? if u disconnect the - 2 the bat. 4 about 30 sconds it will clear any old codes. sometimes a good motor will run poorly because it still THINKS its broken. if u ran it for 5 minutes or so, and it didnt smoke, then chances r the exaust is clean enough. 1 way 2 check 4 vac leak is 2 spray carb cleaner around any manifold gasket area or vac line wile the engine is idleing. if u get a sudden change in idle, u found your leak.
something else. after any head job, they all smoke a little. greasy fingerprints, solvents, spilled fluids, ect. that smoke should go away within a very few miles. hope this helps.
Thanks. (Sorry bout the change up of names, it kept loggin me out when I posted.) Anyway. I thought maybe because my battery was low, so I left the battery charger on there for a few hours, and then crunk it again today, let it run without giving it any gas until the temperature guage was at normal temp. It didn't smoke with just a little gas but the more I pushed it to the floor, the more it smoked.I'll try what you said asap, and i'll get back to you..
Next thing(sorry, I'm still kind of on the cracked cylinder wall)---OK, a good friend has a 90 tercel with a 3e-fe (this is an automatic) and mine is a 5e-fe (standard)...if it is a cracked cylinder wall, will the timing belt and all work? From the looks of it, the 3e's transmission is in the same place and everything. The reason they stopped using the car is because the transmission was messin up, and the head was really messed up. I looked at one of my old head gaskets and the one off of the tercel, and they seem to be identical. So if it turns out to be a cracked cyl. wall, I just want this to be a temp. fix until I find out how much it is going to cost me to fix, and so I can get up the money. hello davesgurl. no problem with the name thing. what color was the smoke. u may not have 2 change the block. do u have a repair manuel? it will tell u if those engine blocks are in the same family. if the head gasket is the same, they probly r. dont b sorry about thinking its 1 thing or another. pursue your ideas. it is very difficult to help online because i cant c and touch and smell the rig myself. u can. u know the history of the rig way more than i. i can only make suggestions. if it is a cracked wall, i think a compression test would show that. also, how does your oil look? is it forcefully blowing coolant out of the radiator when its cold? again, what color is the smoke? black is fuel, gray/blue is oil, white is coolant.
hopefully u wont have a combo of those. black might b something with a vac. leak. probly not the head gasket, or cyl. wall. i would like 2 think that your mechanic checked carfully 4 cracks and grooves in the walls. i must also say that same is somtimes hard 2 c. good luck and i will be waiting 4 your spray results.[vac leak] testing stupid thing wouldnt let me in.Car Repair Talk's forum.
