noisy muffler on 1988 Cabriolet

Our mechanic put a new muffler on our daughters 88' Cabriolet, but it is very noisy. He says that the only way to eliminate the noise is by putting on an expensive Volkswagon muffler. Is this true?

I notice a small hole in the muffler approx. one inch from the tailpipe.
Is this part of the muffler in some way?
Thanks Does the muffler look new? Could be that he took an old muffler and slapped it on there. That hole shouldn't be there and is likely the cause. 76GMC1500 wrote:Does the muffler look new? Thanks for your response. The muffler is brand new. The mechanic says that the hole is there as a drain for condensation. Does this sound accurate? Yes, I recently had an exhaust put on my 1998 Chev. Venture. It has a drain hole in it too. They said that it was to let the water drain out so that it didn't rust through. hi. u can use any muffler that will fit in the rite location. call your local parts store, c what they say. b careful not 2 buy a muffler that is the same brand as what it already has. im not up on v/w. your mechanic may b correct about sound quality. check around. keep us posted.
