I recently got the engine replaced in high-milage 1996 RAV4. Although the car has always been "loud," after a few weeks of driving, the car developed a loud "winding" sound from the engine compartment.
The sound seems to come from the front and not any particular wheel in general. It seems to begin in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears and lessens when you let off the gas, but is nonetheless there. It becomes more high pitched as you drive.
I am not sure whether it is the transmission, the axle or maybe even a wheel bearing.
Has anyone ever encounted something like this. It is very perplexing.
thanks,Car Repair Talk's forum.
