I am the proud owner of a toyota camry 1989 saloon model. When I bought it a year ago it was very silent on rough roads and this really made my day. When I did my first major service at 6000 miles (I did the minor one at 3000 miles) I had all the bushes at the back changed. The front ones appeared okay as did the front bushes. It is now due for the next minor service but I notice that now when I pass short sections of rough road or potholes I hear creaking noises all over the car which is very unpleasant. I also notice that at about 90 mph there is a whirring/brring sound from the front suspension like the sound of something rotating inside a cylinder/shaft and hitting against the sides. When I brake from such a speed there is a grinding noise also from somewhere in the front. Can someone please tell me what the creaking noises are and what I can do about them, and what about this grinding and whirring noise from the front that appears to come from somewhere at the bottom (maybe drive shafts/brakes/cv joint/suspensions???? I don't know). However, the shock absorbers are in tip top form but it could be anything else. Help for my baby!!!!
Hi,
Good chance the squeaking on rough roads is that you need all your front end suspension fittings "greased". This should be done at least every other oil change but is often not done. This would account for the squeaking and if you are in a cold climate and they salt the streets for snow, the salt dust can really dry out this fittings and the cold weather can stiffen what lube you may have active. Grease will probably give you immediate results.
The grinding sound from braking sounds like your brake "rotors" may
need attention and maybe pads and hardware should also be checked. Sometimes higher speeds will offer more vibrations that you may not experience under slower speeds . Brakes usually are good for 30-40K miles depending on your type of driving. I would also be sure to have your front "wheel bearings" inspected, lubed and/or replaced. This should be done every brake job.
Hope this gives you something to work with.
