Engine noise while idleing cold

I just started hearing a loud "whining" or "whirring" sound after start-up and while engine is cold and idleing----it lasts about a minute or two and then fades away, car runs fine.-----Most likely problem? Hi TRIMS713, At colder temps the alternator and power steering pump can make the noise you describe. Since it goes away I wouldn't be too concerned about it at this time. Bill Hi:

To add to 'Willnick's" post:

It sounds like it could be a worn dry belt. The cold dry weather will tend to make belts "Sing" a little bit.

Also, if your vehicle's a Ford product: Their power assisted racks are notorious for being "Noisy", especially when it's very cold outside. Hi,
I agree that it sounds like a "dry" belt. Especially in the winter with the salt dust from street salting it can dry out belts. When this happens to me I buy this "spray can" for lubing belts. Usually works right away. Just be careful to buy the correct spray. Not all are good for "serpentene" (probably spelled wrong) belts.
