Chirping sound when engine is cold - 98 Chevy Cavalie

Sometimes in the morning when it is really cold, after I start the engine, I hear a chirping sound that doesn't go away until the engine is warmed up. I just replaced the serpentine belt so it is definitely not the belt. I have heard it could be a problem with the bearings on one of the components the belt drives, my question is how do I check for this? Obviously I would need to remove the serpentine belt, but what do I look for in terms of checking the bearings? I assume it would be rough turning of the pulley by hand.

I have also heard it could be the belt tensioner. My question is again, how do I check for this?

If anyone has any suggestions as to what it may be, I would love to hear

Thanks!

EDIT:
Another problem that isn't really related to this one is, when the engine is cold only I hear a tapping sound when I start driving. This sound goes away when the engine is warmed up. I first thought it could be a warped piston, when the engine heats up it expands and fits the cylinder. I figured a compression test would be good to test for this so I did one and the compression came back normal. Should I do a compression test when the engine is cold? What could this sound be? take the belt off and spin all the pulleys by hand. if u hear any noise, or feel roughness as u turn it, theres a problem. and as u spin it, make sure it rotates straight with no wobbles. since u only hear the noise when the engine is cold, do this test with a cold engine.

the pulley on the belt tensioner is checked the same way. as far as the tensioner itself, as long as theres good tension on it and the belt is tight, it should be ok.

hard to tell about the tapping sound without hearing it, but it could be a sticking valve lifter. there could be some dirt in it blocking oil flow til the engine warms up and the oil gets thinner and can lubricate it normaly. if this is what it is, the fix would be to clean or replace the lifter, and that involves pulling the head off to get to it. Cool thanks! Ill try it out and post the results Would I be able to remove the lifters with a strong magnet stuck into the rocker arm bore? That would make life so much easier haha sorry dude the lifters are wider then the push rods and bores. only way to get them out is from the bottom. cant blame u for asking tho

i dont usualy recommend additives but one thing u could try is to drain out the oil and refill it with new oil but use a qt of 'marvel mystery oil' in place of a qt of oil. run the engine at fast idle for about 30 minutes. then drain the oil, refill with new oil and change the filter. if a lifter is noisy cause of dirt or sludge this may clean it out.

if this dont work, i think your only choices are to either live with the tapping, or get redneck and tear into the engine. if it was me, id probbly live with the noise if it aint too loud and only happens til the engine warms up. Cool thanks a lot
One more question! If I do find a squeaky or bad pulley, what are my options? Can I just lube up the pulley with oil? Or must the whole component the pulley is attached to be replaced? a noisy pulley is usualy caused by a bad bearing on the shaft that connects the pulley and the component. some times the bearing can be replaced but that involves rebuilding the component and aint realy worth the time or effort. so if u find a bad pulley your best bet would be to replace the component. Thanks for all the help Ill try this when the weather isn't so bad!Car Repair Talk's forum.
