How's it going, I have a '00 Sonata and when I go to crank up, it won't turn over and the dash lights just light up and makes this clicking niose. I thought it was the battery because when someone gave me a jump it, fired right up a few times after that. I admit, I have added some "accesories" to my car, but the dealer said that my altenator and battery checked out fine. Do you think they said that because the car is still under warrenty? I don't know I suck at cars!!
Hi pure28, What kind of accessories did you add? And how long does the car sit before it does this clicking thing? Let us know so we can further advise. Bill
A clicking sound with a charged battery is probably either a loose/dirty electrical connection or a bad starter.
Check both ends of both battery cables for cleanliness and tightness. Also check all wires running to the starter. Hey Bill,
Thanks for the reply. Soon as the car tries to turn over it starts that noise. The car could have only been sitting for 2 minutes or 2 hours. The "acceries I put on was neon lights, I have about 10 tubes total, plus a strobe kit. Hi pure28, I would suggest taking it to a different shop and have them load test the battery. Check the alternator output. Check starter draw. Check how many amps are being taken out of the battery when everything is off and the key is out of the ignition. Those 4 tests should determine what system or part is bad and needs replacing. I don't feel the lights you put on should draw any amps out of the battery when the car is shut off. And there shouldn't be any reason for the dealer to tell you everything is fine when it isn't because if they are like the gm warrenty if parts aren't replaced then the tech doesn't get paid much for just testing the car.
