94 Honda Passport exhaust noise

recently i've noticed noises that seem to be coming from the exhaust on my 94 honda passport. the noise is hard to describe, maybe like a gurgle or popping. it happens when i take my foot off the gas while in gear and seems to be the loudest when shifting from first to second gear. any ideas at what this could be? thanks! The oxygen getting into the exhaust, allowing any unburnt hydrocarbons to ignite. This usually happens when you cut the throttle at high rpm. It can also be attributed to an exhaust leak that is allowing air to get into the exhaust system. These leaks are usually noisy and you would know right away. The reason it is loudest when shifting from first to second gear is because you aren't going very fast so there isn't much road noise to drown out the sound. Some popping is normal for all cars, but the muffler usually keeps it quiet enough you can't hear it. Maybe your muffler has lost its packing? This is more of a dirtbike problem, but anything is possible. Has your car gotten any louder out the tailpipe since you bought it? Another possibility is a lean condition during deceleration. On some carbureted engines, there is a vacuum actuated valve that opens a fuel dump into the engine during deceleration. Reduces the effects of the lean condition and, therefore, the popping during deceleration.

You really have nothing to worry about. Hi: That other post is an excellent explaination.

Is your muffler all the way to the rear of the vehicle Car Repair Talk's forum.
