A friend of mine has a 2002 lincoln LS
he can enter the vehicle with the key and attempt to start the vehicle . all lights on dash will illuminate as they should . then the car will sometimes start and immediately shut down and the alarm will sound .
sometimes the car will not start at all . just click from under the hood .
if his wife is near the car , she can hit the keyfob button and disarm the alarm and it will start for him and his key .
it has now stopped working and will not even start using the keyfob trick .
any help ??

There are two theft systems on that vehicle and they both work independent of each other. One is the PATS or Passive Anti Theft System and the other is the Perimeter Anti Theft.
PATS can disable the vehicle from starting or cranking and uses a transponder in the key to allow starting.
Perimeter Anti Theft is used to deter thieves from stealing what is in your vehicle by sounding the horn and flashing the lights. Parimeter won't disable the engine from running, so it sounds like something funky is going on electrically.
The first thing you should do is check the battery's condition. Have it load tested and make sure that the cables are clean and tight.
If that is good and the problem is still there, your going to have to tell your friend to take it to a shop and have the modules in the vehicle scanned for codes. The perimeter anti theft system uses 3 modules in different parts of the vehicle to monitor states of switches and to control outputs to the horns and lights. The PATS system uses a transceiver module, the instrument cluster module, and the PCM for system operations. All these modules are accessible with a factory high end scan tool. Any codes that are stored is useful information for determining where to start diagnosis.
