2004 Expedition 4WD Front End Noise

Puzzled here... Have a humming noise coming from the front end starting at around 25mph. When i turn to the right, it goes away, turn to the left it gets louder. My experienced tells me it is the right wheel bearing that is done. Well, changed both wheel bearing assemblies and the noise is still there??? What else could make the noise come and go based on load transfer?
Thanks! Hmmm...interesting. If someone is riding in the back, can they tell where it is coming from? Sometimes noises in the rear sound like they are coming from the front because the noise bounces off the windshield. I have seen a few rear axle problems on those. Could be an axle bearing. Does the noise go away when you touch the brake? Haven't had anyone in the back to check. Really seemed to be from the front right. It was the change in sound when going left and right that had me thinking front rt. It changes with loading and unloading of the front when steering. The rear wouldn't have much of a change load wise i wouldn't think?? Another possibility is a bad tire. You could rotate your wheels to see if he noise goes away or appears in the rear.

It is highly possible to have rear axle shaft bearings change noises under different loading conditions. The vehicle's weight in the rear is transmitted through the axle bearings. The weight in the rear also shifts just as the weight in the front does when you are making cornering maneuvers.

Check out this video of how weight transfers on this vehicle. I know it is a simulation, but the theory is shown.

Thanks for the help. We try to determine the source just as you have, sometimes riding in the back of the vehicle may help in determining where the noise is originating because of the windshield reflecting sounds. It seems to be worse in larger vehicles because the sounds echo more because of the space.

You might be able to hear a bad bearing if the vehicle is on the lift running and in gear. We isolate it by using a stethoscope. It may show up or may not because there really is no load on the bearing when the tires aren't on the pavement. Does the 2004 expedition have that aluminum differential, with the "live" cv axles, Discrete? not sure...will have to ask amcclelland Yes it does. Been through 2 rear ends so far as well... but that was a different noise, only when under acceleration.
With the live rear axle and cv joints, doesn't appear there would be an axle shaft bearing afterall. Maybe it is a rear wheel bearing?Car Repair Talk's forum.
