How to Retrofit Air Conditioning in a Pontiac Grand Prix

Pontiac Grand Prix cars manufactured in or before 1994 use R12 refrigerant. You must retrofit these cars using a retrofit kit from your local auto parts store to accept R134 refrigerant before you can recharge the system. In some areas, a license is required to retrofit an air conditioning system. If this is the case in your area, take your car to a professional to retrofit it.

Difficulty:
ModerateInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Towel
  • Retrofit kit
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Marker
  1. Step 1

Have a service technician evacuate the air conditioning system in your car. This removes all of the R12 refrigerant from the system. This is usually free since R12 refrigerant is very expensive.

  2. Step 2

Locate the Low Pressure Side service port for the air conditioning system. You can find it near the firewall on the passenger side of your car. Remove the blue or black cap marked LOW. Wipe off the port with a towel.

  3. Step 3

Look at the port. If you see a quick connect valve, the system has already been retrofitted. If you see a screw-type connector, you should continue with the retrofit.

  4. Step 4

Put the longer adapter from the automotive retrofit kit onto the port. Tighten it using an adjustable wrench. Place the blue cap from the retrofit kit onto the adapter. This keeps dust out of the system and helps to keep refrigerant in the system.

  5. Step 5

Find the High Pressure Side service port. This is located near the Low Pressure Side service port. Remove the red cap marked H or HIGH and wipe the port off with a towel. Place the shorter adapter onto the port. Twist it using an adjustable wrench until it is securely fastened to the port. Place the red cap from the retrofit kit onto the adaptor.

  6. Step 6

Fill out the necessary information on the retrofit sticker using a permanent marker. You have to stick this to the inside of the hood where it can be seen easily by anyone who works on your vehicle.

  7. Step 7

Recharge the air conditioning system. See the related eHow titled "How to Recharge Air Conditioning with Freon in a Pontiac Grand Prix."
