Difficulty: Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
- Oil
- Oil pump
- Seal guide tool MD998285
- Phillips screwdriver
- O-ring
- Remove Old Oil Pump
- Step 1
Drive your vehicle up onto ramps or lifts. If you use a jack, brace the front wheels and set the emergency brake so the wheels don't roll.
- Step 2
Disconnect the negative battery cable and rotate the engine so that the No. 1 cylinder is in the top dead center of its compression stroke. Drain the oil from the engine.
- Step 3
Mount the engine with the proper blocks. Remove the front mount brackets and accessory drive belts. Remove the timing belt upper, the lower covers, the timing belt and the crankshaft sprocket.
- Step 4
Disconnect the electrical connector for the oil pressure sending unit and the oil pressure sensor. Take out the oil filter, the oil filter bracket, the oil pan, the oil screen and gasket.
- Step 5
Remove the plug cap in the engine front cover with special tool MD998162. Disconnect the plug on the side of the engine block. Place a steel rod with a shank diameter of 0.32 inches into the plug hole to hold the silent shaft.
- Step 6
Take off the driven gear bolt, which secures the oil pump driven gear to the silent shaft. Remove the front cover mounting bolts. Note their lengths.
- Step 7
Remove the case cover and the oil pump assembly. Take out the silent shaft if necessary. Remove the oil pump cover on the back of the engine front cover. Take off the oil pumped drive and the driven gears.
- Step 8
Clean the components to remove contaminants and gasket material. Put the oil pump gears in the front case and rotate the front case to make sure the rotation is smooth and the gears aren't loose. Check for ridge wear and replace any worn or damaged components.
Install New Oil Pump - Step 1
Line the timing mark on the oil pump drive gear to the driven gear. Install them in the engine front case and add engine oil to the gears.
- Step 2
Install the cover of the oil pump and torque the bolts to 17 ft-lb. Use a proper driver and install the new crankshaft seal in the front case.
- Step 3
Set the new case gasket into position and put the seal guide tool MD998285 on the front end of the crankshaft for protection. Add some oil to the outer part of the seal pilot tool.
- Step 4
Insert the front case assembly through the new front case gasket, temporarily tightening the flange bolts. With the new oil filter bracket and gasket in place, mount the oil filter onto the bracket. Put the bolts and washers on and torque them to 14 ft-lb.
- Step 5
Slip a Phillips screwdriver into the hole on the left side of the engine block. Lock the silent shaft in place. Install the oil pump drive gear onto the left silent shaft and tighten the driven gear bolt to 27 ft-lb.
- Step 6
Place a new O-ring on the groove in the front case. Install the plug cap and tighten it to 17 ft-lb. Insert the oil screen into position with the new gasket in place. Clean the cylinder block and the mating surfaces of the oil pan and apply sealant to the roof on the oil pan flange. Install the oil pan within 15 minutes and tighten the bolts to 60 in-lb.
- Step 7
Connect the oil pressure gauge unit, the oil pressure switch, the electrical harness connector and the oil cooler. Torque the oil cooler bolt to 31 ft-lb.
- Step 8
Add fresh oil into the engine and install a new oil filter. Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the Mitsubishi Galant engine. Check for leaks.
