How to Replace an Oil Pump in a Hyundai Sonata

The oil pump lubricates the engine by keeping the oil circulating. Without this lubrication, the engine on your Hyundai Sonata wouldn't run. The pump usually is located in the oil pan. You can replace a pump without professional assistance.

  • Oil pump
  • Oil
    Remove Old Oil Pump
  1. Step 1

Drive your Hyundai Sonata up onto ramps or lifts. Brace the front wheels so they don't roll if you use a jack. Set the emergency break so the car doesn't roll.

  2. Step 2

Drain the oil from your engine and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the following in order: accessory drive belts, front cover, timing belt, crankshaft timing sprocket, oil pan, oil pickup tube, pressure relief valve, oil pressure switch, oil filter adapter, oil pump, oil plug cap and the left cylinder block plug.

  3. Step 3

Use a 5/16 inch prying tool to hold the shaft by putting it in the plug hole and remove the balance shaft bolt. Take out the left balance shaft retaining bolt, the front case assembly, the left and right balance shafts and the oil pump housing and gears.

  4. Insert New Oil Pump
  5. Step 1

Install your oil pump housing and the gears. Add the left and right balance shafts. Put in the front case assembly and tighten the bolts to 20 ft-lb.

  6. Step 2

Put in the left balance shaft retaining bolt and tighten it to 25 to 29 ft-lb. Insert the left cylinder block plug, tightening the plug to 14 to 20 ft-lb.

  7. Step 3

Assemble the following components in order: the oil pump plug cap, the oil filter adapter, the oil pressure switch, the pressure relief valve, the oil pickup tube, the oil pan, the crankshaft timing sprocket, the timing belt, the front cover and the accessory drive belts.

  8. Step 4

Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start your Hyundai Sonata engine and check for leaks. Drive your car off the lifts if you don't find any.
