How to Replace an Oil Pump in a Ford F-Series

Losing lubrication in an engine will destroy it. The oil pump makes sure this doesn't happen by cycling oil through the engine and keeping it lubricated. In most cases, the oil pump lasts the lifetime of a car, but if there is an accident or if an engine needs overhauling, the oil pump in the Ford F-Series vehicle may need to be replaced.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
    Remove the Old Oil Pump
  1. Step 1

Drive your vehicle up onto ramps or lifts. This gives you room to work as you pull out the oil pump. You could also use a jack, but make sure you brace the front wheels so they don't roll. In addition, set the emergency break firmly into position so the car doesn't roll.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the old engine oil into a pan and then take out the oil filter. Locate the six oil pump bolts, visible once you remove the oil filter, and remove them. They hold the oil pump in.

  3. Step 3

Remove the oil pump drive gear, oil pump driven gear, oil pump O-ring and the oil pump itself. Throw out the O-ring.

  4. Step 4

Look for damaged components and clean all surfaces to remove debris and contaminants. Take the plug away from the oil pressure relief valve and remove the oil pressure relief valve ball and spring. Then clean those parts.

  5. Insert New Oil Pump
  6. Step 1

Lubricate all parts of your vehicle with clean engine oil. Join the oil pressure relief valve ball and the spring with the new plug.

  7. Step 2

Insert the new oil pump, O-ring, oil pump driven gear and the drive gear. Put the six mounting bolts on and torque the two outer ones to 71 to 97 in-lb. The four inner ones should be 15 to 22 ft-lb.

  8. Step 3

Add clean engine oil to the O-ring rubber on your new filter and install it onto the filter mount. Put in the oil pan drain plug.

  9. Step 4

Fill the engine with new oil and connect the negative battery cable on your Ford F-Series vehicle. Start the engine and check for leaks. Make sure the oil light on the instrument panel turns off after six to eight seconds.
