How to Drop the Oil Pan in a Geo Metro

The Geo Metro is the same car as the Suzuki Swift and was first introduced in Japan in 1983. The Suzuki Motor Corporation manufacturers the vehicle. The latest edition of the vehicle is the third generation, with model years from 1998 through 2001. Dropping the oil pan on the Geo Metro is necessary when there is damage to the pan or it needs a new gasket.

Difficulty:
ModerateInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Oil drip pan
  • Wrench
  1. Step 1

Run the Geo Metro for at least 10 minutes to warm the engine to its normal temperature. Park the car on a flat surface safe for repairs and turn off. Jack the car up using a jack and jack stands. Follow the jack and jack stand manufacturer requirements for use so that the vehicle has support that is safe and secure.

  2. Step 2

Place an oil drip pan under the oil pan. The oil pan is located under the Metro, about the center of the engine between the tires. Go under the hood of the vehicle and located the Geo Metro's oil cap, located on the right side of the car about half way down the side. Twist it off and set aside; doing so will relieve any pressure.

  3. Step 3

Slide back under the Metro and locate the oil drain plug found on the back of the oil pan, towards the rear of the car. Use a wrench to unscrew and remove the oil plug, allowing the oil to flow from the oil pan into the drip pan below. The draining will take at least 10 minutes to complete.

  4. Step 4

Locate the battery box under the hood of the vehicle. Use a wrench to unscrew and remove the bolt holding the negative battery cable in place.

  5. Step 5

Remove the front pipe from the exhaust manifold and then remove it from the center or resonator pipe by pulling it apart. Remove the catalytic converter, the crankshaft position sensor and the flywheel inspection cover, all located under the vehicle, near the oil pan and all removed using a wrench.

  6. Step 6

Unscrew each of the oil pan bolts located around the outside perimeter of the oil pan; remove them. Keep one hand on the bottom of the oil pan throughout the removal process to ensure the pan does not fall off.

  7. Step 7

Drop the oil pan after removal of all the bolts. The gasket will fall with it, leaving just the oil pump strainer and bracket for removal by using a wrench.
