How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket in a VW Beetle

If you notice that your VW Beetle is leaving a trail of oil behind, it may be time to change the oil pan gasket. Replacing the gasket on a VW Beetle with a diesel engine can be fairly complicated, but on a Beetle with a gasoline engine, the job is more straightforward and doesn't require lifting the engine. Here's how to change the oil pan gasket in the 1998 and later model VW Beetle.

Jack and jack stand
Drain pan
Socket wrench
Clean shop rags
Engine degreaser
Replacement gasket
Torque wrench
Approximately 4.9 qt. clean motor oil
Empty milk jug

Step 1
Jack up the front of the VW Beetle and secure it firmly on a jack stand. Block the rear wheels to keep them from rolling.
Step 2
Crawl under the car and locate the drain plug on the underside of the drain pan. Put a drain pan under the plug and remove the plug with a socket wrench. Remove the bolts holding the oil pan in place and carefully remove the oil pan.
Step 3
Scrape the old gasket off the oil pan and wipe the surface with engine degreaser. Attach the new gasket.
Step 4
Replace the oil pan and torque the bolts in a crisscross pattern according to specifications.
Step 5
Raise the front of the car just enough to slide out the jack stand, lower the car and remove the jacks.
Step 6
Fill the engine with fresh oil and check the level with a dipstick to be sure it's at the fill level. VW Beetle models require approximately 4.8 qt. of oil.
Step 7
Pour the old oil into an empty milk carton and dispose of it properly at a garage or at your neighborhood hazardous waste facility.
