How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket in a Mitsubishi Galant

If you want to keep your Mitsubishi Galant in good running condition, be sure to take care of repairs as the need arises. If you notice a puddle of oil under the engine, your Galant may need a new oil pan gasket. Replacing the gasket on Galant models from 2004 and later is a fairly straightforward process.

Difficulty:
ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Wheel blocks
  • Jack and jack stand
  • Socket wrench
  • Thin putty knife or similar tool
  • Bucket
  • Clean rags
  • Solvent
  • Liquid gasket
  • Torque wrench
  • 4.5 to 5 qt. clean motor oil
  • Empty milk jug
  1. Step 1

Park the Mitsubishi Galant on a level surface, engage the parking brake and block the rear wheels to keep them from rolling. Jack the front of the vehicle up on a jack stand. Remove the negative battery connector.

  2. Step 2

Crawl under the vehicle and take off the engine undercover. Remove the starter and the engine oil dipstick.

  3. Step 3

Locate the drain plug on the under side of the drain pan and put a bucket under the plug. Loosen the plug with a socket wrench, then remove it with your fingers so it doesn't drop in the bucket. Let the oil drain into the bucket. Once the oil has completely drained, replace the drain plug.

  4. Step 4

Remove the bolts holding the lower oil pan and carefully remove the oil pan. Scrape off the old gasket with a thin tool such as a putty knife, being careful not to scratch the surface of the joining surface. Wipe out the oil pan and wipe the joining surface with solvent.

  5. Step 5

Run a continuous line of liquid gasket around the joining surface of the lower oil pan and quickly reattach the oil pan before the liquid gasket sets up. Torque the bolts to the specifications in the manual.

  6. Step 6

Replace the dipstick, starter, and the engine undercover and reconnect the negative battery cable. Jack up the vehicle enough to remove the jack stand, then lower the vehicle and remove the jacks.

  7. Step 7

Fill the crankcase with 4.5 qt. of oil, then check with a dipstick to be sure it's at the fill line and add more oil if necessary. Mitsubishi Galant cars require between 4.5 and 5 qt. of oil. Pour the old oil into an empty milk carton and dispose of it at a garage or a hazardous waste facility.
