How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket in a Mitsubishi 3000GT

If you have a Mitsubishi 3000GT sports car, keep it running like it should by taking care of any problems that arise, including changing worn out oil pan gaskets. Here's how to change the oil pan gasket in the 1997 to 2001 Mitsubishi 3000GT.

Difficulty:
ModerateInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Jack and jack stand
  • Socket wrench
  • Bucket
  • Thin putty knife
  • Clean shop rag
  • Solvent
  • Liquid gasket
  • Empty milk jug
  1. Step 1

Park the Mitsubishi 3000GT on a flat surface, engage the parking brake and put a block in front of the rear wheels. Jack up the front of the vehicle and slide a jack stand securely under the front end. Unhook the negative battery cable.

  2. Step 2

Slide under the vehicle and locate the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. Put a bucket under the plug and loosen the drain plug with a socket wrench. Remove the plug with your fingers so it doesn't fall in the bucket. Let the oil drain into the bucket and replace the drain plug.

  3. Step 3

Remove the transfer case assembly if your Mitsubishi 3000GT is an all wheel drive. Disconnect and lower the exhaust pipe. If your engine is turbocharged, disconnect the turbocharger return pipe from the oil pan.

  4. Step 4

Loosen the bolts holding the oil pan and remove them with your fingers. Separate the oil pan and remove it.

  5. Step 5

Scrape off the old gasket with a thin putty knife. Wipe out the oil pan with a clean shop rag and wipe the joining surface with solvent. Run a continuous bead of liquid gasket or sealer around the joining surface, and reattach the oil pan quickly, before the oil pan has time to set up.

  6. Step 6

Replace the transfer case assembly if applicable. Reattach the exhaust pipe and if you have turbochargers, reattach the return pipe to the oil pan. Jack up the vehicle enough to slide out the jack stand, lower the vehicle and remove the jacks. Reattach the negative battery cable.

  7. Step 7

Pour 4 qt. of oil into the crankcase, then check the level with the dipstick. Mitsubishi 3000GT models require about 4.5 qt., so add enough additional oil to bring it to the fill line. Pour the old oil into an empty milk carton and dispose of it properly at a garage or hazardous waste facility.
