How to Replace a Clockspring in a Cadillac Escalade

The clockspring in your Cadillac Escalade is a device that supplies power for the deployment of your airbag. The clockspring also provides power to the electrical systems mounted on the steering wheel, such as cruise control and audio controls for the stereo system. When you notice your airbag light on or the controls mounted on your steering wheel fail to work properly, changing the clockspring can fix the problem.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • 21mm socket
  • Steering wheel puller
  1. Step 1

Turn on your Cadillac Escalade and point the wheels forward, with the steering wheel control buttons located at the top and bottom of the steering wheel. Cut the power to the engine and disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.

  2. Step 2

Remove the fuse that powers the airbag (fuse number eight) from below the back seat of your Cadillac Escalade. Allow the airbag to discharge for at least 15 minutes after removing the power sources to prevent accidental deployment while you work on the steering wheel.

  3. Step 3

Pry the face of the steering wheel off by inserting a flat bladed screwdriver into each of the four corners and pulling gently. Remove the airbag and disconnect each of its six connections.

  4. Step 4

Unscrew the nut on your steering wheel with a 21mm socket and remove the wheel with a steering wheel puller. Disconnect the clockspring mechanism and replace it with a new clockspring made specifically for your Cadillac Escalade.
