How to Install a Water Pump in a Hyundai Sonata

Open the hood and use a screwdriver to unscrew the clamp that connects the negative battery cable to the battery post. Remove the cable. Use a jack to elevate the Hyundai Sonata and jack stands to shore up the jack.

Release the pressure in the radiator by removing the cap. Take out the drain plug located underneath the radiator. Catch the coolant in a resealable container.

Disconnect the parts leading to the water pump on the Hyundai Sonata using an adjustable wrench. In the following order, this includes: accessory drive belts, radiator hose, bypass hose, water pump pulley, front cover, timing belt and alternator bracket. As you remove each part, lay it out, alongside its bolts, in the order disconnected.

Undo the bolts securing the water pump to the engine. Clean off the mount after removing the pump, using a shop rag. Inspect the area for cracks.

Place high temperature automotive sealant on the new water pump, in the place that it meets the engine block. Position the new gasket on the sealant on the pump. Hold it in place as you mount the new water pump on the side of the Hyundai Sonata's engine.

Tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to the torque required for your engine size. They are as follows: 1.5L SOHC engines get 105 to 132 inch pounds; 1.5L, 1.6L DOHC, 1.8L, 2.0L or 2.4L engines get 14 to 20 foot pounds; and the 2.5 L engines get 11 to 16 foot pounds of torque.

Reassemble the rest of the parts in the order you took them off the Hyundai Sonata. Replace any parts that appear worn or damaged, if needed.

Replace the radiator's drain plug and refill the radiator with the amount and type of coolant specified in your owner's manual. Remove the jack stands. Lower the car back to the ground.

Replace and tighten the negative battery cable to the post with the screwdriver. Crank the Hyundai Sonata's engine and check for leaks. Then, close the hood.
