How to Replace the Springs in a Pontiac Grand Prix

Raise the Grand Prix if necessary, block the wheels with jack stands, and remove the strut assembly from the car.

Place the strut assembly in a strut compressor and use the compressor's forcing screw to compress the spring and release the tension in the strut mount. This is potentially dangerous and should be done with extreme caution. Make certain the strut is mounted in the compressor correctly to avoid injury.

Take off the strut shaft nut and relieve the pressure on the spring in order to remove it from the strut assembly.

Inspect the strut assembly for signs of wear. Replace the worn spring with a new Pontiac certified coil spring.

Reinstall the lower insulator before installing the spring, dust shield, jounce bumper and strut mount.

Compress the strut in the strut compressor, attach and torque the shaft nut to manufacturer's specifications.

Reinstall the strut assembly in the Grand Prix and perform a safety check before driving.
