- Replacement springs
- Safety goggles
- Floor jack and stands
- Socket wrench and sockets
- Box wrench
- Adjustable crescent wrench
- Lug wrench
- Torque wrench
- Spring compressor and associated tools
- Step 1
Raise the vehicle if necessary and secure the wheels with jack stands before removing the strut assembly.
- Step 2
Secure the strut assembly in the compressor and match up the compressor mounting holes with the Grand Am's strut.
- Step 3
Compress the spring to half its normal height while taking off the nut from the strut damper shaft. Use the alignment/guiding rod J-34013-27 to guide the damper shaft through the spring cap. Take off the strut assembly components.
- Step 4
Replace the spring and inspect the strut assembly components for wear. Reassemble the strut by first mounting the strut assembly in the compressor using the bottom locking pin.
- Step 5
Tighten the strut mount nut to manufacturer's specifications. The front and rear struts receive different foot pounds of pressure.
- Step 6
Remove the strut assembly from the compressor and reinstall the strut.
- Step 7
Perform a safety check on the Grand Am before taking it out on the road.
