Raise the vehicle and use jack stands to secure the wheels.
- Step 2
Take the strut off the Pathfinder and take note of the position of the bolts for ease of reinstallation.
- Step 3
Attach a spring compressor and compress the spring before removing the piston rod nut. This step can be dangerous if the spring compressor is not attached properly. Use caution as the spring coil can cause injury if released improperly.
- Step 4
Take off the upper strut mount, mounting bracket, upper strut bearing and spring seat before removing the coil spring.
- Step 5
Replace the spring, attach the compressor and reassemble the strut. Reinstall the the spring's upper seat, upper seat bearing, strut mount bracket and upper strut mount. Tighten the piston rod nut to manufacturer's specification. Do not over-torque the nut.
- Step 6
Remove the spring compressor and install the strut assembly onto the Pathfinder.
- Step 7
Put the wheels back on, lower the Pathfinder, remove the jacks and stands, before checking the wheels' alignment. Adjust the alignment if needed.
Replacing the Rear Springs - Step 1
Raise the Pathfinder and securely block the wheels with jack stands.
- Step 2
Support the Pathfinder along the frame with jack stands, and place a floor jack beneath the rear axle.
- Step 3
Remove or disconnect: rear wheels, shock absorbers, stabilizer bar links, lateral control rod.
- Step 4
Lower the floor jack beneath the axle to take the pressure off the coil spring and attach a spring compressor before removing the springs.
- Step 5
Replace the springs and check the other suspension components for signs of wear when reinstalling.
- Step 6
Torque all bolts and nuts to the proper factory specifications. Make sure to remove the compressor once the spring is reattached.
