- Replacement springs
- Safety goggles
- Floor jack and stands
- Socket wrench and sockets
- Box wrench
- Adjustable crescent wrench
- Lug wrench
- Torque wrench
- Spring compressor and associated tools
- Replacing the Front Springs
- Step 1
Raise and support the car. Use jack stands to secure the wheels. Disconnect the negative cable on the battery.
- Step 2
Disconnect and remove: wheel assembly, sway bar link, damper fork bolts and assembly, upper shock absorber nuts and the strut assembly.
- Step 3
Attach the spring compressor and compress the springs. This can be potentially dangerous. Use caution as the springs carry a great deal of energy which must be released slowly.
- Step 4
Remove the self-locking nut and washer, upper bushing, bracket, upper spring pad and collar along with the cup assembly, dust cover and bump rubber. Check these for signs of wear.
- Step 5
Remove and replace the coil spring. When replacing the spring, align it to the spring seat correctly. Compress the spring and install it onto the shock assembly.
- Step 6
Reattach the dust cover, bump rubber, cup assembly, upper bushing, collar, and upper spring pad, upper bracket assembly, upper bushing, washer, and locknut, shock absorber and tighten all nuts and bolts to specifications.
- Step 7
Reinstall the the damper fork and tighten the bolts before connecting the sway bar link, tightening the nuts and reinstalling the wheel and tire assembly.
Replacing the Rear Springs - Step 1
Raise and support the Galant. Use jack stands to secure the wheels before taking off the shock and spring assembly.
- Step 2
Compress the spring with a spring compressor. This can be dangerous if not performed correctly as the energy of the spring must be handled carefully.
- Step 3
Take off the shock cap, and remove the self-locking nut while holding the piston rod. Replace the self-locking nut if necessary.
- Step 4
Remove the following: upper bracket assembly and spring pad, collar, upper bushing, cup assembly, bump rubber and dust cover. Separate and remove the spring from the shock assembly.
- Step 5
Place the spring into the spring seat and install the coil spring onto the shock.
- Step 6
Reinstall the dust cover, bump rubber, cup assembly, upper bushing, collar, upper spring pad and bracket assembly; reassemble the piston rod and bushing before removing the spring compressor from the spring and tightening the self-locking nut.
- Step 7
Install the shock cap, shock and spring assembly. Lower the vehicle and perform a safety check before driving.
