How to Replace the Fan in a Geo Tracker

Your Geo/Chevy tracker has a mechanical or belt-driven fan. Removal of the old fan and installation of the new one requires only basic tools. There is no need to raise the vehicle or work underneath it. An amateur should be able to do this job in about half an hour.

    Remove the Existing Fan
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable and slip some non-conductive material over it to make sure it won't slip back into contact with the battery terminal.

  2. Step 2

Use a wrench to remove the four nuts holding your Tracker's engine fan in place.

  3. Step 3

Remove the four radiator shroud clips.

  4. Step 4

Detach the power steering reservoir from its mooring and set it aside.

  5. Step 5

Lean the radiator shroud toward the engine so that it's out of your way.

  6. Step 6

Detach the engine fan from the pulley hub. Remove both the fan and its clutch assembly.

  7. Install the New Fan
  8. Step 1

Attach the new fan/clutch assembly where the old one used to be.

  9. Step 2

Return the radiator shroud to its new position and clip it in place again.

  10. Step 3

Replace the power steering reservoir in its original location. Make certain to reconnect it.

  11. Step 4

Mount the fan and clutch assembly on the pulley hub.

  12. Step 5

Tighten all four fan nuts to 97 inch pounds (11 Nm). You may need a second wrench to hold the fan shaft in place as you do this.

  13. Step 6

Reconnect the negative battery cable and check to make sure the newly installed fan operates properly.
