How to Replace the Exhaust Manifold in a Mitsubishi Galant

The Galant is Mitsubishi's entry into the family sedan market. While it offers good value and fuel economy, it was not initially a competitor. Mitsubishi redesigned the Galant in 2004, making it larger and offering an optional 230 horsepower V6 engine. Used models are popular among those looking for capable, practical transportation. The following steps guide you through the installation of the exhaust manifold on the 3.8L V6 left side engine.

    Remove the Exhaust Manifold
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the negative cable on the battery. Take off the engine under cover and remove the air cleaner intake duct assembly. Locate the front heated oxygen sensor electrical connector and remove it and the sensor.

  2. Step 2

Take off the heat protector shield. Remove the connecting bolts to the front exhaust pipe. Pull the gasket and discard it. Disconnect the exhaust manifold bracket.

  3. Step 3

Remove the bolts that hold the exhaust manifold in place. Lift the exhaust manifold from the engine and discard the gasket.

  4. Step 4

Clean the mating surfaces to remove any gasket material, dirt and carbon deposits. Wipe the surfaces with solvent. Check for damage.

  5. Install the Exhaust Manifold
  6. Step 1

Set the new gasket on the mating surface of the cylinder heat. Install the exhaust manifold over the gasket.

  7. Step 2

Put the retaining bolts in place and finger-tighten them. Torque the bolts, working out from the center, in three passes to 33 to 39 foot pounds.

  8. Step 3

Install the remaining components in the reverse order of their removal. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  9. Step 4

Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes. Check for exhaust leaks and proper engine operation.
