How to Replace the Exhaust Manifold in a Kia Spectra

The Kia Spectra offers a 124 horsepower 1.8L four-cylinder engine in the models produced between 2000 and 2004. Although the engine didn't have a lot of pep, the Spectra was praised for above-average materials and design, as well as a smooth, easy-to-handle ride. These steps can guide you through the installation of the exhaust manifold in the 1.8L engine.

    Remove the Exhaust Manifold
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal. Take off the engine cover and remove the oxygen sensors, the front muffler heat protector and the front muffler.

  2. Step 2

Loosen the bolts on the heater protector and then remove it. Treat the bolts on the exhaust manifold assembly with penetrating oil and allow it to soak in for several minutes.

  3. Step 3

Remove the exhaust manifold bolts. Rock the exhaust manifold gently to loosen it and then lift it from the engine. Discard the gasket.

  4. Step 4

Scrape the old gasket material from the mating surfaces. Use solvent to clean the mating surfaces so that they are free of any carbon deposits or dirt.

  5. Install the Exhaust Manifold
  6. Step 1

Position the new exhaust manifold gasket on the cylinder head. Align the exhaust manifold over it. Set the mounting nuts and bolts in place and finger-tighten them.

  7. Step 2

Work from the center out to both ends to tighten the nuts and bolts. Torque the fasteners to 29 to 33 foot pounds.

  8. Step 3

Replace the heater protector and then install the front muffler with a new gasket. Set the front muffler heat protector in place and secure it.

  9. Step 4

Connect the front oxygen sensors. Replace the engine cover.

  10. Step 5

Connect the battery cable to the terminal. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes. Check for exhaust leaks.
