How to Replace the Exhaust Manifold in a Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe debuted in 2001. Hyundai's SUV hit the market with its spacious cabin and comfortable ride. The 2.7L V6 engine option offers 2.7 horsepower. Replace the exhaust manifold in a 2001 Santa Fe in mint condition as a great find for the used-vehicle buyer.

    Remove the Exhaust Manifold
  1. Step 1

    Disconnect the negative battery cable. Take out the heat shield bolts and remove the heat shield.

  2. Step 2

    Separate the exhaust pipe from the manifold. Discard the gasket and clean the mating surfaces.

  3. Step 3

    Treat the exhaust manifold fasteners with penetrating oil and let it sit for several minutes. Loosen the exhaust manifold fasteners.

  4. Step 4

    Lift the exhaust manifold and the gasket from the engine. Discard the gasket.

  5. Step 5

    Scrape the mating surfaces to remove all traces of gasket material, dirt and carbon deposits. Clean the mating surfaces with solvent and check them for damage.

  6. Install the Exhaust Manifold
  7. Step 1

    Install the new exhaust manifold gasket then position the exhaust manifold on the engine. Torque the manifold bolts, working out from the center, to 18 to 22 foot pounds in three or four passes.

  8. Step 2

    Use a new gasket and connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Set the heat shield in place. Tighten the bolts securely.

  9. Step 3

    Reconnect the negative battery cable to the terminal. Start the engine and let it run for several minutes. Check for exhaust leaks and make sure the engine is runs at peak performance.
