How to Replace the Exhaust Manifold in a Honda Prelude

The last generation of Honda's Prelude was issued between 1997 and 2002. It was the biggest and heaviest, and many still say, the best Prelude, having evolved over the years from a chubby baby to a Euro-style coupe. Today a good used Prelude is great find. The following steps guide you through the removal and installation of the exhaust manifold in the 1999 Prelude with the 3.0L engine.

    Remove the Exhaust Manifold
  1. Step 1

    Put the vehicle on a lift or raise it on jackstands. Make sure it's securely supported. Take off the engine undercover and set it aside. Lower the vehicle.

  2. Step 2

    Take off the exhaust manifold heat shield, then loosen the mounting nuts and the exhaust manifold. Lift the manifold from the engine.

  3. Step 3

    Discard the gasket. Scrape the mating surfaces and thoroughly remove gasket material. Check the surfaces for damage.

  4. Install the Exhaust Manifold
  5. Step 1

    Position the new gasket on the cylinder head. Set the exhaust manifold in place aligning it over the cylinder head.

  6. Step 2

    Finger-tighten the nuts and then torque them in sequence, working from the center out, to 23 foot pounds. Set the heat shield in place. Torque the bolts to 16 foot pounds.

  7. Step 3

    Raise the vehicle again. Set the exhaust pipe in position in the exhaust manifold with a new gasket. Torque the nuts to 40 foot pounds.

  8. Step 4

    Lower the vehicle. Start the engine. Check for exhaust leaks.
