How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Saturn VUE

The Saturn VUE has a fuel injector that mixes fuel with air. This technology almost completely replaced carburetors in the late 1980s and its programmable firmware allows the same hardware to be used with different fuels. A fuel injector is only a nozzle and a valve; it still requires a pump to inject the fuel into the engine.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Fuel injector kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Determine which fuel injector your Saturn VUE will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made before 2008 may have a 2.2L L61, 2.4L BAS hybrid, 3.0L L81 or 3.5L L66 engine. Beginning in 2008, models have a 2.4L LE5, 3.5L LZ4 and 3.6L LY7 engine.

  2. Step 2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the intake manifold and unplug the fuel injector electrical connectors.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the fuel rail mounting bolts with a socket wrench and lift the fuel rail away from the intake manifold with the fuel injectors still attached. Release the retaining clip for the fuel injector and remove the fuel injector from the fuel rail. Discard the old O-rings.

  4. Step 4

Install the new fuel injectors by reversing the removal procedure. Lubricate the new fuel injector O-rings with clean engine oil. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts to 87 inch pounds.

  5. Step 5

Turn the ignition on for two seconds without starting the engine to pressurize the fuel system and inspect for fuel leaks. Turn the ignition off for 10 seconds and turn the ignition back on for 2 seconds. Start the engine and check for leaks once again.
