How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Pontiac Grand Am

The fuel injector in a Pontiac Grand Am mixes fuel with air under pressure and rendered carburetors obsolete during the late 1980s. One advantage of a fuel injector is the programmable firmware that allows the same hardware to work with different fuels. The fuel injector assembly includes only the nozzle and valve; it still requires a pump to deliver fuel into the engine.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Fuel injector kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Determine which fuel injector your Pontiac Grand Am will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1973 to 1975 may have a 6.5L or 7.4L engine. The next generation of the Pontiac Grand Am was made from 1985 to 1991 and was equipped with 2.3L, 2.4L, 2.5L and 3.0L engines.

  2. Step 2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the resonator for the air cleaner outlet and the vacuum pipe from the fuel pressure regulator. Remove the fuel supply lines from the fuel injectors and unplug the electrical harness for the fuel injector.

  3. Step 3

Remove the mounting bolts for the fuel rail with a socket wrench. Pull the fuel rail back and upward to lift it out of the engine compartment. Release the fuel injector retainer clip and remove the injector from the fuel rail. Discard the fuel injector O-rings.

  4. Step 4

Position the new fuel injector downward and lower it into the cylinder head port with the connector facing up. Rotate the fuel rail forward to align the injectors and push the fuel injector into the cylinder head port until it clicks.

  5. Step 5

Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts to 89 inch pounds. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
