How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Oldsmobile Alero

The Oldsmobile Alero has a fuel injector that mixes fuel with air. This technology almost completely replaced carburetors in the late 1980s and its programmable firmware allows the same hardware to be used with different fuels. A fuel injector is only a nozzle and a valve; it still requires a pump to inject the fuel into the engine.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Fuel injector kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Determine which fuel injector your Oldsmobile Alero will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. An Oldsmobile Alero may have a 2.2L Ecotec, 2.4L LD9 or 3.4L LA1 engine.

  2. Step 2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the resonator for the air cleaner outlet and the vacuum pipe from the fuel pressure regulator. Remove the fuel supply lines from the fuel injectors and unplug the electrical harness for the fuel injector.

  3. Step 3

Remove the attaching studs for the fuel rail with a socket wrench. Pull the fuel rail back and upward to remove the fuel rail. Release the fuel injector retainer clip and remove the injector from the fuel rail. Discard the fuel injector O-rings.

  4. Step 4

Position the new fuel injector downward and lower it into the cylinder head port with the connector facing up. Rotate the fuel rail forward to align the injectors and push the fuel injector into the cylinder head port until it clicks.

  5. Step 5

Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts to 89 inch pounds.

  6. Step 6

Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
