How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder mixes fuel and air under pressure with a fuel injector. Carburetors previously performed this function passively but were rendered obsolete by fuel injectors in the late 1980s. A fuel injector's programmable firmware allows it to handle different fuels. A fuel injector consists of only the nozzle and valve; it still requires the pump to pressurize the fuel.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Fuel injector kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Determine which fuel injector your Nissan Pathfinder will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1986 to 1995 may have a 2.4L, 3.0L or 2.7L diesel engines. Models built from 1996 to 2004 have 3.3L, 3.5L or 2.7L turbo diesel engines. Models made after 2004 may have a 2.5L turbo, 4.0L or 5.6L engine.

  2. Step 2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and detach the intake manifold collector with a socket wrench. Remove the fuel tubes from the fuel rail in the following order: front right, front left, rear right and rear left.

  3. Step 3

Expand and remove the retaining clips from the fuel injectors and gently push the injectors out of the fuel tubes. Discard the old O-rings.

  4. Step 4

Lubricate the new O-rings with a thin coating of clean engine oil. Position the clips into the grooves on the fuel injectors and align the retaining clip cutouts with the fuel injector protrusions. Insert the fuel injectors straight into the fuel tubes and ensure the fuel tube protrusions are engaged with the fuel injector protrusions.

  5. Step 5

Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts in two stages. Torque the bolts to between 84 and 96 inchpounds first, and then torque them to between 16 and 19 foot pounds. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
