How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Mitsubishi 3000GT

The fuel injector in a Mitsubishi 3000GT mixes fuel with air under pressure and rendered carburetors obsolete during the late 1980s. A fuel injector has programmable firmware that allows the same hardware to handle different fuels. The fuel injector consists only of a nozzle and valve; it still requires a pump to deliver fuel into the engine.

Difficulty:
EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Fuel injector kit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Determine which fuel injector your Mitsubishi 3000GT will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. The Mitsubishi 3000GT was equipped with a 3.0 L 6G72 engine in several different configurations including a twin-turbo version.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and relieve the fuel system pressure. Drain the cooling system and disconnect all components from the air intake plenum. This will allow you to remove the air intake plenum from the intake manifold.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the high pressure fuel lines from the fuel rail and detach the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator. Unplug all electrical connectors from each fuel injector and remove the fuel rail retaining bolts with a socket wrench. Keep the rubber mounting bushings.

  4. Step 4

Lift the fuel rail mechanism away from the engine and gently separate the fuel injectors from the fuel rail. Discard the lower insulator. Some models may also require you to release a retaining clip.

  5. Step 5

Lubricate the new O-ring with a coat of light oil and install the new fuel injectors by reversing the removal procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail retaining bolts to between 84 and 108 inch pounds.
