How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Ford Mustang

Determine which fuel injector your Ford Mustang will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1964 to 1973 come in a range of engine sizes including 170 cubic inch (ci), 200ci, 250ci, 260ci, 289ci, 302ci, 351ci, 390ci, 427ci, 428ci and 429ci.

Examine later models of the Ford Mustang. Models built from 1974 to 1978 were restricted to 140ci, 171ci and 302ci engines. Models manufactured from 1979 to 1993 were available in 2.3L, 3.3L, 3.8L, 4.2L and 5.0L sizes. Models made from 1994 to 2004 may be equipped with a 3.8L, 4.6L, 4.9L, 5.4L or 5.8L engine.

Look at the current generation of the Ford Mustang. Models made after 2005 have a 4.0L Cologne, 4.6L Modular or 5.4L Triton supercharged engine.

Relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the negative cable from the battery with a socket wrench. Remove the fuel supply line from the fuel injector and release both harness retainers on the fuel rail stud bolts.

Move the harness aside so you can remove the connectors for the fuel pressure and temperature sensors. Detach the electrical connectors that run to the fuel injectors and remove the mounting bolts for the fuel rail with a socket wrench.

Remove the fuel rail and injectors from the engine as an assembly. Detach the fuel injectors from the fuel rail.

Install the new fuel injectors by reversing the removal procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts to 89 inch pounds.
