How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Dodge Intrepid

The Dodge Intrepid fuel injector uses pressure to mix fuel with air. This method rendered carburetors almost entirely obsolete during the late 1980s and allows the same hardware to be used with different fuels due to the fuel injector's programmable firmware. A fuel injector consists only of a nozzle and a valve; it still requires a pump to inject the fuel into the engine.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Fuel injector kit
  • Scan tool
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Determine which fuel injector your Dodge Intrepid will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1993 to 1997 have a 3.3L EGA or 3.5L EGJ engine. Models produced after 1997 are equipped with a 2.7L EER, 3.2L or 3.5L EGJ engine.

  2. Step 2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the intake manifold plenum and cover the intake manifold to prevent debris from entering the engine. Remove the quick-connect fittings on the fuel send line at the rear of the fuel rail.

  3. Step 3

Note the location of the fuel injector electrical connectors for future reference. Remove them from the fuel injectors by pressing the tab while pushing the red slider away from the fuel injector. You will then be able to detach the electrical connector from the injector.

  4. Step 4

Remove the mounting bolts from the fuel rail and remove it from the engine. Release the retaining clips for the fuel injectors and remove them from the fuel rail.

  5. Step 5

Install the new fuel injector by reversing the removal procedure. Clean the new O-rings with a small amount of clean engine oil before you install them. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail mounting nuts 21 foot pounds. Pressurize the fuel system with the scan tool and check for leaks.
