How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Geo Metro

Geo uses two types of ignition systems in the Metro. Carbureted, TFI and MFI engines use a distributor system. Other engine types use a distributorless ignition system that uses an ignition coil pack rather than a Metro ignition coil.

Difficulty:
Moderately EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Socket or wrench
  • Replacement ignition coil
  1. Step 1

Remove the ground cable from the Geo Metro's battery and isolate it to prevent an accidental connection, which could cause a fire or possibly electrocute you.

  2. Step 2

Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws that connect the wire terminal to the Metro ignition coil. You should see the wire terminal on the distributor. Label the positive and negative lead wires as they correspond to the connection points on the ignition coil with masking tape. Then, remove the wire terminal.

  3. Step 3

Pull on the boot of the high-tension coil-to-distributor wire to release it from the terminal tower. Don't pull on the wire, or you might detach the wire and render it useless.

  4. Step 4

Support the ignition coil while you unfasten the mounting bolts with a socket or wrench. Then, separate the ignition coil from the mounting system. Remove the old ignition coil and insert the new one into the mounting system.

  5. Step 5

Align the mounting system with the fastener holes and secure the mounting system in place. Continue to reassemble the parts by reversing the steps you took to remove the ignition coil in your Geo Metro.
