How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Ford F-Series

The Ford F-Series uses an ignition system known as a coil on plug (COP) system. The name derives from the setup of the system--an ignition coil sits over each cylinder. The current from the battery flows through the Ford ignition coil, where it boosts the voltage and triggers the spark plugs.

Difficulty:
Moderately EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Screwdriver or wrench
  • Dielectric compound
  • Replacement ignition coil
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1

Remove the ground connection from the battery by disconnecting the negative cable. Use a small screwdriver or wrench to undo the fasteners for the ignition coil electrical connector. Then, remove the ignition coil electrical connector.

  2. Step 2

Twist the ignition coil gently to dislodge it. In some types of engines, like the 4.6L and 5.4L, you need to rotate the ignition coil 30 to 40 degrees, which allows the fuel injection supply manifold to clear.

  3. Step 3

Spread a thin coat of dielectric compound on the rubber boot of the Ford F-Series replacement ignition coil.

  4. Step 4

Insert the new Ford ignition coil. You can use a stock replacement model or a universal ignition coil designed to fit your engine.

  5. Step 5

Put the pieces back together. Tighten the coil bolts with 53 inch pounds of torque, or 6 Nm, using a torque wrench. Check the specifications for torque as it refers to your specific engine; some engines require less torque than others.
