How to Replace the Fan in a Geo Metro

The short-lived Geo Metro was manufactured in a partnership between Chevrolet and Suzuki. Replacing fan in the Geo Metro doesn't require any special tools. The replacement fan doesn't have to be a standard a Geo Metro fan, but the fan does have to meet the same specifications for capacity.

  • Replacement fan
  • Safety goggles
  • Socket wrench and sockets
  • Box wrench
  • Adjustable crescent wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
    Remove the Fan Motor
  1. Step 1

    Disconnect the battery's negative cable. Drain the radiator and remove the radiator's upper hose.

  2. Step 2

    Disconnect the cooling fan motor.

  3. Step 3

    Raise the Metro and block the wheels securely with jack stands before taking bolts off the lower fan shroud-to-radiator frame. Lower the car.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the mounting bolts from the upper fan shroud-to-radiator along with the fan/shroud assembly.

  5. Step 5

    Take off the fan blade-to-motor nut, the fan blade and washer, in that order.

  6. Step 6

    Remove the bolts for the fan-to-shroud bolts before lifting the fan motor out of the car.

  7. Reinstall the Fan Motor
  8. Step 1

    Install the fan motor and put the fan blade back onto the motor before connecting the cooling fan and shroud assembly.

  9. Step 2

    Reinstall the bolts on the upper fan shroud-to-radiator mounting. Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

  10. Step 3

    Raise the car and support the wheels with jack stands in order to connect the bolts for the lower cooling fan/shroud assembly. Torque the bolts to manufacturer's specifications.

  11. Step 4

    Lower the Metro. Hook up the fan's electrical connection.

  12. Step 5

    Connect the clamp on the radiator's upper hose and refill the colling system. be sure to use the proper coolant mixture for the season.

  13. Step 6

    Reconnect the negative battery cable and run the engine. Check to see if the cooling fan is functioning properly. Remove the jack and jack stands.

  14. Step 7

    Turn off the car and let the engine cool. Add additional coolant if necessary.
