How to Replace the Fan in a Chevy Avalanche

The Chevy Avalanche has the comfort and maneuverability of a passenger car and the hauling capacity and performance of a truck. There are two types of fans used in the Chevy Avalanche: electrical and mechanical. The type of fan used in the cooling system will depend upon the model and size of the engine. Replacing the fan in either case is not too difficult.

  • Replacement fan
  • Safety goggles
  • Socket wrench and sockets
  • Box wrench
  • Adjustable crescent wrench
  • Torque wrench
    Replace Electrical Fans
  1. Step 1

    Take off the Avalanche's grille.

  2. Step 2

    Disconnect the fan harness electrical connector.

  3. Step 3

    Loosen and remove the fan-to-brace bolts.

  4. Step 4

    Lift out the fan and replace it with a new one.

  5. Step 5

    Tighten the fan-to-brace bolts to manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Step 6

    Reconnect the fan's electrical connector.

  7. Step 7

    Replace the grill.

  8. Replace Mechanical Belt-Driven Fans
  9. Step 1

    Disconnect the battery's negative cable and remove the shroud from the radiator.

  10. Step 2

    Take off the drive belt but only if necessary to get access to the fan.

  11. Step 3

    Detach and lift out the clutch-to-water pump pulley by removing the four nuts.

  12. Step 4

    Take off the fan clutch bolts and separate the fan from the clutch.

  13. Step 5

    Reinstall the fan on the fan clutch and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications before tightening the nuts on the fan/clutch assembly onto the water pump pulley.

  14. Step 6

    Reinstall the fan shroud.

  15. Step 7

    Reconnect the battery's negative cable. Start the Avalanche and check the performance of the fan.
