How to Replace the Exhaust Manifold in a Toyota Highlander

Take the negative battery cable from the terminal. Raise the vehicle and make sure the supports are secure.

Remove the engine undercovers and then take the front exhaust pipe from both exhaust manifolds below the engine. Remove the four nuts to the EGR pipe on the rear manifold and remove the pipe.

Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor wiring from the right manifold and then take off the manifold stay. Loosen the six nuts on the exhaust manifold. Pull the manifold from the engine.

Clean the manifold surfaces to remove any gasket debris. Discard the old gasket.

Install a new gasket and then align the exhaust manifold over it. Set the nuts in place and finger-tighten them.

Torque the manifold nuts in sequence. Tighten them to 36 foot pounds in three passes.

Position the exhaust manifold stay in place. Tight the bolt to 15 foot pounds.

Reconnect the Hot Oxygen sensor wiring to the exhaust manifold. Connect the EGR pipe to the manifold and to the engine with new gaskets. Torque the nuts to 108 inch pounds.

Connect the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold with a new gasket. Tighten the two nuts to 46 foot pounds. Replace the engine undercovers.

Attach the negative battery cable to the terminal. Lower the vehicle. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
