How to Replace the Exhaust Manifold in a Pontiac Grand Prix

The Pontiac Grand Prix was born as a personal luxury car in the early 1960s. It has since evolved into a sensible family sedan with terrific performance owing to a power V8 engine. The Grand Prix offers a V6 with lots of pep and great fuel economy in the model years between 1997 and 2003. Follow the steps to install the exhaust manifold in the 2002 3.1L left side engine.

    Remove the Exhaust Manifold
  1. Step 1

    Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Take out the right engine mount strut bracket, the crossover pipe heat shield and the crossover pipe nuts to the left exhaust manifold.

  2. Step 2

    Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield. Loosen the exhaust manifold fasteners. Take out the exhaust manifold and discard the gasket.

  3. Step 3

    Clean the mating surfaces to remove old gasket material, dirt and carbon deposits. Wipe the surfaces with solvent to remove any remaining debris. Check for damage.

  4. Install the Exhaust Manifold
  5. Step 1

    Install the new exhaust manifold gasket and position the exhaust manifold over the cylinder head. Torque the nuts in sequence to 12 foot pounds.

  6. Step 2

    Replace the exhaust manifold heat shield. Tighten the nuts to 89 inch pounds. Connect the crossover pipe to the exhaust manifold. Torque the bolt to 18 foot pounds.

  7. Step 3

    Set the crossover pipe heat shield in place. Torque the bolt to 89 inch pounds. Position the left side engine mount strut bracket in place. Tighten the bolt to 37 foot pounds.

  8. Step 4

    Reconnect the throttle body air inlet duct. Connect the negative battery cable to the terminal.

  9. Step 5

    Start the engine. Allow the engine to run for several minutes and then check for exhaust leaks.
