How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima utilizes a distributorless ignition system (DIS), which relies on a total of six Maxima ignition coils to create combustion. The ignition coils do this by converting the low-voltage power from the battery into a high-voltage spark that triggers the spark plugs. If an ignition coil isn't working correctly, it reduces your engine's ability to perform correctly.

Difficulty:
Moderately EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Wrench or socket set
  • Maxima ignition coil
  1. Step 1

Prevent injuries, like electrocution or accidents, including engine fires, by disconnecting the ground battery cable from the terminal. The ground connects to the terminal on the post with a (-) sign.

  2. Step 2

Access the engine components by removing the engine cover, if there is one.

  3. Step 3

Detach the air intake tubes and the air cleaner assembly. Then gently move the harness, its bracket and hoses to expose the Maxima ignition coil.

  4. Step 4

Remove the wire harness connector from the ignition coil. You may also need to remove mounting retainers that secure the ignition coil in place. Typically, a small wrench or socket set provide the necessary grip to do this.

  5. Step 5

Pull up and slightly twist the ignition coil to release it from the cylinder head.

  6. Step 6

Install the new Maxima ignition coil. Make sure you get a good connection and a tight seal between the ignition coil boot and the cylinder head.

  7. Step 7

Reattach and reposition the components you moved in order to access the ignition coil.
