How to Replace a Stabilizer Link in a Pontiac Grand Am

The Pontiac Grand Am came on the scene in the 1970s. It was affordable, attractive and offered a nice array of standard features and options that positioned it a few rungs up from entry-level. The last generation of Grand Ams was produced from 1999 through 2005 with either an economical 2.4L four-cylinder or the more powerful 3.4L V6. Here are the do-it-yourself details to replace the stabilizer link.

  • Mechanic's toolset, including a full socket set, wrenches and screwdrivers

  1. Step 1

    Make sure the vehicle components are completely cool. Raise the vehicle on a rack on or secure supports. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.

  2. Step 2

    Take the fastener for the stabilizer link off the stabilizer link bolt. Remove the stabilizer link bolts, the insulator and the spacer.

  3. Step 3

    Install the new stabilizer link with the spacer, insulator and the bolts. Replace the bolts with new ones whenever they are loosened or removed.

  4. Step 4

    Attach the stabilizer link to the link bolt, then torque the nut until it reaches the level of the bolt threads. Torque the nut to 13 foot pounds.

  5. Step 5

    Remount the front wheel and tighten the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and check the tire pressure.

  6. Step 6

    Check the air pressure in the tires. Test drive the vehicle to verify steering and handling. Arrange to have a professional check the alignment.
