How to Replace a Stabilizer Bar in a Saturn VUE

The Saturn Vue was the first "homegrown entry" by Saturn and General Motors into the small, car-based SUV market. Established competition forced Saturn to come out swinging: the Vue offered a roomy cabin, extensive options, a number of drivetrain options and an attractive pricetag. Saturn has paid close attention to consumer responses and needs and improved the Saturn accordingly. The following steps guide you through the installation of a new stabilizer bar.

Difficulty:
ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Mechanic's toolset, including a full socket set, wrenches and screwdrivers
  • Torque wrench
  • Ball joint separator
  • Replacement parts
  • Tie rod separator SA91100C
  • Steering Linkage Installer J44015
    Remove the Stabilizer Bar
  1. Step 1

Use the steering wheel to position the front wheels fully to the right. Raise the vehicle on secure supports. Take off the front wheels with the tires.

  2. Step 2

Take the stabilizer link off the stabilizer bar, then remove the nut from the outer tie rod to steering knuckle. Dispose of the nut.

  3. Step 3

Separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle with a tie rod separator SA91100C. Remove the bolts that connect the cradle to the stabilizer bar clamp. Remove the clamps and the bushings from the bar.

  4. Step 4

Pull the stabilizer bar away from the vehicle by removing it through the left wheel opening. Be careful not to catch the transmission shift cable on the stabilizer bar.

  5. Install the Stabilizer Bar
  6. Step 1

Put the new stabilizer bar through the left wheel opening to install it. Be careful not to catch the transmission cable.

  7. Step 2

Install the bar clamps and the bushings, then set the bar clamp bolts in place. Torque the bolts to 37 foot pounds. Check the link boots for damage and replace them as needed.

  8. Step 3

Stabilize the boot to prevent twisting. Connect the stabilizer links to the bar. Tighten the nut to 48 foot pounds. Reconnect the left outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.

  9. Step 4

Use the Steering Linkage Installer J44015 and set the ball stud taper in position at 30 foot pounds. Take out the J44015. Set a new tie rod nut in place and tighten it to 37 foot pounds.

  10. Step 5

Put the wheels and tires back on the front of the vehicle. Lower the vehicle and road test it to assure proper handling.
