How to Install a Car Starter in a Pontiac Sunfire

Drive the Sunfire up onto the car ramps and apply the parking brake. If you're using a floor jack, raise each front quarter by the rocker panel with the jack. Place a jack stand under each frame rail.

Place a wheel chock behind one of the rear tires.

Release the hood latch and open the hood.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a ratchet and socket or hand wrench and tuck it on the side of the battery to ensure it does not come into contact with the terminal while you're replacing the starter.

Grab the tools and the new starter and crawl under the Sunfire on a creeper if you have one.

Locate the starter on the lower right hand side of the transmission housing by the fly wheel.

Remove the nuts securing the battery cables to the starter using the ratchet or wrenches.

Remove the upper and lower starter bolts. Remove the old starter.

Install the new starter and replace the upper and lower starter bolts. Tighten securely.

Replace the battery cables onto the starter. The new starter will have new nuts on the stud posts that you'll have to remove first.

Grab the tools, creeper (if you used one), and the old starter and remove them from under the Sunfire.

Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Test start the Sunfire to ensure the starter is working properly.

Remove the wheel chock and lower the Sunfire.
