How to Repair the Door Handle of a GMC Truck

When an exterior door handle breaks on a GMC truck, it is normally the small arm that operates the rod to the door latch that breaks. Pulling too hard on the door handle is usually what causes the door latch to break. On occasion the outside handle itself will break. Once again, too much force can cause it to break, since it is not made of a strong metal or plastic. The door handles are easily broken if forced.

ModerateInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Common screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Set of 1/4-inch sockets
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Needle-nose pliers
  1. Step 1

Unbolt the screws in the armrest. Insert the common screwdriver in between the door panel and the door and pry out the trim fasteners on all three sides of the panel. Pull the lower part of the panel out slightly and lift up to release the panel from the upper ridge.

  2. Step 2

Remove all the electrical connectors from the main window switch. Place the panel to the side. Remove the water shield carefully so that it can be reused. This exposes the access to the inside of the door.

  3. Step 3

Unsnap the plastic retainer on the rod at the door handle and pull the rod out to remove the door latch rod from the door handle. The rod can be pulled out with needle-nose pliers.

  4. Step 4

Remove the door handle using the 1/4-inch 10mm socket and ratchet. Unscrew the nuts from the inside of the door on both sides of the door handle. Remove the door handle from the outside of the door.

  5. Step 5

Install the new door handle, making sure that the rod retainer is located on the new door handle. If not, take it off of the old door handle and install on the new one.

  6. Step 6

Screw the two nuts on the door handle and tighten. Insert the door latch rod into the door handle and snap the retainer onto the rod to keep it in place. Install the remainder of parts in reverse order of removal.
