How to Use CV Axle Pliers

Axles use a special joint, called a CV joint, or constant velocity joint. This joint is lubricated by axle grease and protected by a boot, called a CV boot. The boot is held in place with a special clamp. CV axle pliers are used to remove the CV clamp ring on the CV boot of an axle. CV pliers use a special edge that can either pry off the CV boot ring or can simply cut through it. CV boot pliers can be purchased at any auto parts store.

Difficulty:
ModerateInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • CV boot pliers
  1. Step 1

Hold the CV boot pliers in your dominant hand with the "nose" or cutting edge of the pliers on the CV boot clamp.

  2. Step 2

Pull the handles away from each other to open the pliers.

  3. Step 3

Grab onto the CV boot clamp with the cutting edge of the pliers and squeeze the handles together to cut the CV boot clamp off the CV boot.

  4. Step 4

Pull up on the metal retaining tab using the nose of the pliers if your vehicle's CV boot clamp has a removable clamp that can be removed without destroying the clamp. Once the retaining tab is pulled up and away from the boot, the ring should slide off the end of the CV boot.
