How to Change the Battery in a Cadillac

Doing your own car repairs can save you hassle and money. Changing a battery is one of the easier repairs you can make. However, in a Cadillac it's not quite as simple as popping the hood and unscrewing a few bolts.

  • New battery
  • 5/16 inch wrench
  • 13 milimeter socket and ratchet with extension

  1. Step 1

    Remove the rear seat. Push the lower center on each side toward the rear of the car. Pick up on the front of the seat. Remove the bottom cushion of the rear seat.

  2. Step 2

    Use the 5/16 wrench to unhook the negative (black) cable from the battery.

  3. Step 3

    Use the 5/16 wrench to remove the positive (red) cable from the battery.

  4. Step 4

    Use the 13 mm socket, extension and ratchet to remove the holddown clamp, a wedge-shaped piece of plastic located near the bottom of the battery.

  5. Step 5

    Remove the old battery. Nothing should be holding it at this point.

  7. Step 1

    Set the new battery in where the old one was.

  8. Step 2

    Replace the holddown clamp and tighten it. Make sure the battery is secure by trying to move the battery. If it moves, take the clamp off and install it again.

  9. Step 3

    Hook up the positive (red) cable, using the 5/16 wrench.

  10. Step 4

    Hook up the negative (black) cable, using the 5/16 wrench.

  11. Step 5

    Replace the seat by pushing the seat down and back at the same time. If it's not secure, try it again.
