How to Change an Evaporator Core

The evaporator core of the air conditioning system facilitates the correct functioning of the air conditioning in your vehicle. The evaporator core must be replaced to not only keep the inside of your vehicle comfortable and cool, but prevent the engine from overheating. This is an extremely challenging project for the average weekend mechanic but well worth the effort.

Difficulty:
Moderately ChallengingInstructionsThings You'll Need:
  • Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Release the air conditioning pressure. This must be released into a recycling unit at an air conditioning repair shop approved by the EPA.

  2. Step 2

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the air conditioning unit. Take out the air conditioning unit under the dashboard. The unit must be turned upside down. Find the retaining screws that keep the two parts of the unit together. Place the screws to the side.

  3. Step 3

Flip the unit over again then manually take out the upper part of the housing.

  4. Step 4

Raise and remove the evaporator from its position in the lower housing. Slide in the new evaporator core and place it into the space where you just removed the old one. Reverse the previous steps to install the brand new unit.
